Cavaliers’ Donovan Mitchell Stays Put In NBA All-Star Voting
With the NBA season in full swing, the 73rd NBA All-Star Game is now one month away.
While the Cleveland Cavaliers have multiple players playing at an All-Star level, just one has a strong standing in the game’s voting for starters.
On Thursday, the NBA announced the third round NBA All-Star voting returns, with star guard Donovan Mitchell receiving the fourth-most guard votes in the Eastern Conference.
Mitchell remains in the same standing for the third consecutive voting return. After standing at 624,819 votes on January 4 and 1,020,122 votes on January 11, the four-time reigning All-Star has now garnered 1,382,662 votes as of today’s announcement.
In his seventh NBA season, and second with the Wine and Gold, the 27-year-old is in the midst of a career campaign.
Mitchell is currently averaging 28.2 points, along with career-bests of 5.4 rebounds, 5.8 assists, 2.0 steals, and 0.4 blocks (tied) per game, while shooting a career-best 87.6% from the free-throw line. The 2023 All-Star starter ranks sixth in the NBA in scoring, and fourth in steals per game.
Another Cleveland player, however, was outside of the top 10 for his conference’s position for the third consecutive voting return.
Jarrett Allen has been one of the NBA’s premier players over the Cavaliers’ last 10 games, racking up 10 consecutive double-doubles. The 2022 All-Star has averaged 19.0 points, a league-leading 14.9 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 1.3 blocks, and 1.1 steals per game in this span.
On Thursday, Mitchell stated his belief that his teammate deserves to be an All-Star this season.
Voting for this season’s NBA All-Star starters will end on Saturday at 11:59 p.m., with the starters being announced one week from today. The reserves, who are selected by the league's head coaches, will be announced on February 1.
