However, one of the Cavaliers' star player's status was in jeopardy heading into the game. Donovan Mitchell was ruled questionable on Wednesday evening with an illness. He will be OUT for the Cavs against the Magic.
Mitchell did participate in the team's morning shootaround but he apparently was not well enough to participate in Thursday night's game. Cleveland now pivots and will have Isaac Okoro start at shooting guard in replace of the
Missing Mitchell in their first game back from the break certainly isn't ideal. But there's no point in pushing him if he's not at 100% health. Cleveland has a brutal schedule coming out of the All-Star Break and they'll need Mitchell to be ready for some of their matchups against current playoff teams.
Spida has undoubtedly been Cleveland's best player this season and he's creeping his way into the MVP conversation too. Mitchell is averaging a career-high 28.4 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 6.3 assists a game.
He's averaging 27 points against the Magic this season so his presence on the floor will be missed.
Even though Mitchell will not be on the floor, J.B. Bickerstaff did say at practice on Wednesday that both Darius Garland and Evan Mobley would no longer be on a minutes restriction which should help fill some of the void.
