Despite making an immediate impact upon his arrival to the LA Clippers at the 2022 trade deadline, veteran forward Robert Covington never got an extended look in the rotation last season. This was despite the poor play of starting power forward Marcus Morris, who held the starting job until the final weeks of the regular season.

Even once Morris was removed from the starting lineup, Covington did not get the consistent backup power forward minutes that many were expecting him to. Head coach Ty Lue was noncommittal when asked if Covington would become the backup power forward once Nicolas Batum got the starting lineup promotion, and often opted for three and four guard lineups down the stretch of the regular season instead of using Covington.

Unsurprisingly, this was a development that left Covington confused, which is something he recently shared during an interview with Law Murray of The Athletic.

"It's a bigger chip on my shoulder," Covington told Murray. "Not playing that much last year really put me in a place — all right. I got to force them. So, come back, do what I got to do. They say this is the mentality of, you know, come back strong, get better. That way, it won't be none of that. Won't be no issues of, whatever the case. … It's the way the year went. It wasn't how I expected, but I said it's come back, go to the drawing board, and get better."
