Report: Clippers Unlikely to Extend Ty Lue This Offseason
In a recent article, Bleacher Report's Chris Haynes said the LA Clippers are unlikely to extend Ty Lue this offseason, which could allow him to hit free agency next summer. Haynes also added additional insight into the Phoenix Suns' interest in Lue before hiring Frank Vogel, saying the Clippers would have requested draft capital in exchange for Lue, but no official contact was made between the two sides on a potential move.
While this does not mean Lue will leave the Clippers after this season, it does make sense both for him and the organization to keep his deal aligned with Kawhi Leonard and Paul George. LA's two stars can opt out after this season, which will make next summer a very interesting one for the Clippers.
The Clippers are entering the 5th season of Leonard and George as a duo, and the 4th under Ty Lue. Their peak is still one Western Conference Finals appearance, which came in 2021. All three of Lue's seasons with the Clippers have ended with one or both of Leonard and George sidelined due to injury.
The current expectation is for the Clippers to continue building around their two stars this summer, with Ty Lue remaining at the helm. What happens next summer will likely depend largely on how this season goes for LA.
