NBA Draft Scouting Report: BYU's Aly Khalifa
Aly Khalifa
Forward | BYU
Height: 6'11” | Weight: 230 lbs
2024 Draft Age: 22.58
Prospect Profile
After transferring from Charlotte to BYU, Khalifa will have the chance to break out with a brighter spotlight this season. A highly skilled big, he has a unique game that’s tough to evaluate but certainly could translate at the next level. Efficient, floor spacing bigs that can act as connectors and take care of the ball always have a chance at sticking in the NBA. Furthermore, he can impact the game in so many ways outside of scoring.
Like many of the best forwards in the NBA, Khalifa played guard growing up, then hit a growth spurt and retained the guard skills. This has resulted in him being one of the best frontcourt passers in the country with vision and decision making that is off the charts for his size. Last season, he produced 3.1 assists per game (24.5% rate) while turning the ball over just 1.7 times per contest.
Khalifa is a legit three-level scorer, boasting solid splits from beyond the arc, in the midrange and at the rim. He doesn’t possess the athleticism to necessarily get to his spots with ease — although he is crafty — so his offensive game is pretty unorthodox, but effective.
As good as Khalifa is, there’s certainly some untapped potential that could be unlocked with better conditioning and playing at a healthier weight. Increasing mobility would really help on the defensive end which would help his draft stock tremendously. His mass has been something that actually helps him situationally at times, but a more lean frame would open up many more pathways to him succeeding at the NBA level.
Khalifa’s game is built upon a solid foundation given his background playing for Egypt in various international events as well as time at the NBA Academy in Australia with several NBA talents. He has the pedigree and training to support the unique skillset, with this experience being influential in how high his basketball IQ is.
