Prospect Profile

An incoming Colorado freshman, Cody Williams is the younger brother of Thunder rising star Jalen Williams. The 6-foot-8 wing enters his freshman season with good positional size and a point forward skillset.

Williams makes it look effortless at times, boasting a game that’s both fluid and smooth. He’s extremely versatile and can play multiple positions on both ends. While he can adequately score the ball, Williams is also a good playmaker and facilitator for his size. He is a fantastic connector and helps the offense run even more efficiently.

As a scorer, Williams is definitely best inside the arc. He’s very good with both hands as a finisher and operates well in the midrange. As of today, he’s more of a straight-line driver but does has some wiggle. During his freshman season, it will be interesting to see if he can develop more moves to break down his defender and create for himself. He is very comfortable driving both directions and using either hand. Once he gets to the cup, he has underrated pop and can finish quickly with power. Williams should have the ability to emerge as one of the best rim finishers in this class. He also has an intriguing in-between game that features an effective floater.

Williams has a smooth jumper, but he hasn’t yet shown ability to be a consistent 3-point threat. This will be the massive swing skill this season that could be the difference between going top 10 or later in the first round. If he's able to even shoot 35% from beyond the arc as a freshman, that will show he's improved. It might take some small tweaks to his mechanics, as the jumper could be more fluid.

On the defensive side of the ball, Williams gets even more intriguing. Given his size and tools, he can guard upwards of four positions. He uses his length very well and covers a ton of space. While he does need to get stronger, the natural feel on that end of the floor will make him an impactful defender from day one.

One of the best recruits in his high school class, Williams is a five-star and one of the biggest prospects to ever go to Colorado. He’ll have high expectations, but don’t be surprised if he ends up being one of the most versatile players in the 2024 NBA Draft. At the high school level, he handled the ball a ton. It will be fascinating to see how much more he plays off-ball this season in college.
