NBA Draft Scouting Report: Creighton's Trey Alexander

Prospect Profile
After two good seasons at Creighton, Alexander has proven he’s a prospect with NBA upside. Set to have just turned 21 years old when the 2024 NBA Draft comes around, the sharpshooting guard could be an underrated selection.
Although he has a wiry frame, Alexander is able to make an impact on both ends. What’s most impressive about his offensive game is the efficiency and decision making. The foundation of his game is sound, as he doesn’t try to do too much. Alexander plays with fundamentals in mind and at his own pace. Since he lacks elite athleticism and burst, he plays a more methodical game.
Alexander became a full-time starter in year two while his shot attempts nearly doubled. Scaling out his role wasn’t an issue, as his efficiency actually rose despite adding shots to his nightly average. Especially from deep, the Creighton guard improved tremendously and knocked down over 40% of his triples as a sophomore on 4.4 attempts per game.
The mechanics of Alexander’s jumpers is interesting. He has a small kick that somewhat hinders the fluidity of his shot on the way up, but it obviously didn’t affect his percentages this season. It’s more obvious the further he gets from the rim, so that will be something to monitor moving forward. It slows down his release and could make deeper shots at the next level more difficult.
In the NBA, Alexander will be more of an off-ball guard but does have ability to create for others. He’s a guy that can add a few assists on any given night, which is exactly what he did for the Bluejays for the past two years. When the ball is in his hands, he’s able to process the game quickly and make the right reads.
Alexander was a huge piece of Creighton making the Elite Eight this season. If he continues to get stronger, the impact he can make on both ends will continue to rise. He’s shown flashes of defensive upside, but has more work to do if he’s going to be effective against NBA competition.
The former four-star recruit and Oklahoma Gatorade Player of the Year is the cousin of Minnesota Timberwolves guard Mike Conley. If he has a solid pre-draft process, he’s got a chance to be taken in the second round this summer.
