Prospect Profile

Drake's Tucker DeVries was one of best mid-major wing prospects because of his production, translatable NBA skills and projectable role. He was the focal points of opposing scouting reports and has shown encouraging year-to-year development in his game and is expected to become a member of an NBA system at some point. With that in mind, he surprisingly didn't declare for the 2023 NBA Draft and will set his sights on the summer of 2024.

DeVries has proven to be a coveted top notch 3-point shooter with elite touch. The 6-foot-7 wing shot at a fantastic clip on good volume, while also showcasing shotmaking versatility. Shooting will always be at the top of the list of coveted NBA skills, especially when it comes with size. When balancing size and shooting upside, he's one of the best in the country.

Not only are the mechanics of his jumper great, but he's also fundamentally sound with his footwork and balance. In order to generate good looks, DeVries is great at moving without the ball and relocating on the perimeter. When he does catch, he has a few go-to moves to free himself up even more, but also has the height to shoot over defenders.

Often times, DeVries has showcased his underrated ability to score in the midrange. He's got great touch fading away or floating the ball to the rim. He likes to back down undersized defenders in that range with a turnaround fader. Overall, he's a smart and effective offensive player.

DeVries does struggle defensively at times, especially when he guards aggressive or physical players. He also has trouble staying in front of shifty guards, as his lateral quickness and change of direction isn't great. On the flip side, he does have good size which helps combat those types of deficiencies.

Although he may not get as much buzz as other elite shooters due to playing at a smaller school, DeVries was a four-star recruit coming out of high school and has always been a talented player. Furthermore, a lot of the things he does really well should translate regardless of the level of competition. It will be more about improving his weaknesses at the NBA level to ensure he can stay on the court in all situations.
