Prospect Profile
With the opportunity to play for a Duke roster that should be very competitive given how many key pieces returned, McCain will have the chance to play for a contending team this season. A sniper from beyond the arc, he has on-ball skills but can also slide in as a floor spacer early in his college campaign. As such, there’s a clear pathway to earning immediate minutes with the Blue Devils.
Between the smooth jumper that features a quick release and great mechanics, along with an incredibly high IQ, McCain has a translatable archetype. While the ability to be a spot-up shooter is valuable, he also has upside as a self-creator in the midrange. With a variety of ways to score in that area, the Duke guard could really provide three-level upside as a freshman if he gets the opportunity.
When it comes down to it, McCain is definitely much more of a scorer than facilitator. As such, he should project to be an off-ball guard rather than a lead at the next level despite being just 6-foot-3. His success at the college level could come down to how many shots he's able to get each game, as he's primarily been a volume scorer to this point.
Furthermore, he has defensive upside despite being undersized and can impact the game on both ends. McCain is also an energetic player that plays with passion and is willing to play whatever role is required to win games. He's also strong and has a good frame that allows him to play bigger than he is.
The five-star recruit has long been known as one of the best guard prospects in his class and has also seen success outside of traditional high school play. He was a key piece of the gold medal winning USA U18 National Team in Mexico. Although he’ll be in a crowded Duke backcourt that features Tyrese Proctor and Caleb Foster — who both have first-round talent — McCain himself has what it takes to be among the best guards in this upcoming class.
