NBA Draft Scouting Report: Duke's Mark Mitchell

Wing | Duke

2024 Draft Age: 20.80
Prospect Profile
When looking around the NBA, some of the most valuable role players are of the same archetype as Mitchell. He has ideal size for a wing and an incredibly high ceiling. As such, he could be one of the biggest breakout sophomores in the country this season.
Not only does Mitchell have good height at 6-foot-8, but he also has a strong build and long arms. He’s explosive and is best when finishing near the rim. With that in mind, he did convert on over 35% of his 3-pointers last season although he only had 54 attempts. If Mitchell is able to take more shots from the perimeter and continue to do it efficiently, his three-level scoring will speak for itself.
Last season at Duke, Mitchell produced more turnovers than he did assists. While he isn’t the type of wing that has the ability to facilitate, Mitchell is a good positional rebounder. In fact, he pulled down more than one offensive rebounds per game as a freshman. If he’s able to continue to find ways to impact winning without the ball in his hands, his draft stock will continue to rise. On that note, he is smart as a mover away from the ball, slashing and cutting well to get easy looks for himself.
Defensively, Mitchell has all of the tools to be a versatile defender than can hold his own against bigs and also defend well in space. If he is able to show more of that as a sophomore, teams will value his potential as a two-way prospect that could impact the NBA game early in his career. Proving he has the floor of a key role player but the upside to be more will be extremely appealing, especially since he can play either forward spot.
Mitchell was teammates with Grady Dick at Sunrise Christian as a senior, but wasn’t able to shine as bright as him to go one-and-done at the college level. With that in mind, he absolutely has the talent to end up having just as successful of an NBA career. This season at Duke, Mitchell will play alongside sophomore returners Tyrese Proctor and Kyle Filipowski as well as four incoming top-50 recruits.
