Prospect Profile

After three seasons at VCU — one of which he sat out due to a significant injury — Watkins took his talents to the ACC to play for Florida State for the current college season. While that was set to be an increase in level of competition, he’s actually played a more prominent role and has been even more productive than he was in the Atlantic 10.

At 6-foot-7, Watkins will be a prototypical wing at the NBA level, but also has some lead guard instincts. He certainly won’t be a true point guard at any level, but the vision and passing upside is hard to deny. In fact, he’s one of the highest assist producers on this Florida State roster.

Watkins can score when needed from all three levels, shooting solid splits from everywhere on the court. While he’s not an elite scorer, defenses have to at least respect his shot on the outside and also collapse and help when he drives given his ability to finish at the rim. This only adds to his versatility and upside as a prospect who could play three positions at the next level. Watkins is also a very productive rebounder for his position which is a huge help in the modern game. Overall, he projects to be more of a complimentary scorer at the next level.

Like many Florida State wings of he past, Watkins is an impactful defender that leverages his length well. He’s not much of a shot blocker, but he’s well known for being disruptive in passing lanes and pesky on-ball. He is able to generate turnovers and get his team out in transition while handling the ball, which is a skill that will certainly translate to the NBA.

He wasn’t the biggest recruit coming out of high school, but the best players almost always end up where they’re supposed to be. Despite suffering a serious injury after his freshman season, Watkins emerged as a serious contributor last season and then made his way to a prolific program like Florida State. Not only did he make it to the ACC, but he’s also been very good on the floor at that level of competition.
