Prospect Profile
Nisine Hamir Poplar — who goes by Wooga Poplar — is a candidate to have a breakout college season. He played a minor role off the bench as freshman, but became a key starter in year two as Miami saw a ton of success. Poplar has a real chance to be the team’s top scorer in what could be a breakout junior season.
An off-ball guard with good size and athleticism, he’s very bouncy and makes some flashy plays with what he’s able to do physically. Not only does he have the tools, but Poplar is also incredibly skilled. He can space the floor with his reliable 3-point shot, handle the ball and even create for himself and others. Offensively, he’s well-rounded and a real catalyst on that end.
Poplar is an efficient scorer with good range and a great free throw percentage. Everything points to his perimeter shot translating at the next level. Something that’s less obvious about Poplar that could pop this season is the untapped passing upside. He notched 10.7% assist rate last season and will have even more opportunity as a junior to showcase the facilitation. Poplar is also a good rebounder for his height and position.
The defensive side of the ball is also intriguing for the Miami prospect. He tallied 42 total steals last season and really has a disruptive presence on that end. He’s strong and athletic enough to make things happen often.
Poplar helped Miami to the Final Four last season in a prominent role, but should truly be the featured player this season. He’ll have more opportunity to shine with Isaiah Wong and Jordan Miller are in the NBA now, but will also get the chance to play alongside incoming transfer wing Matthew Cleveland.
