Prospect Profile

Toohey decommitted from Gonzaga to stay in Australia and play in the NBL’s Next Stars program. The combo forward will suit up for the Sydney Kings and have chance to be another success story coming out of this program.

While Toohey plays mostly at the forward spots, he has guard skills and will likely play on the perimeter at the NBA level. With that in mind, he has the skillset to play nearly any position and fits the modern style of the NBA.

As high as Toohey’s upside is, he does play out of control at times. He needs to button up his skills, while also developing and establishing his foundation. He is comfortable with ball in his hands, but sometimes does too much. The Australian prospect has good footwork, but is still figuring out how to process the game at the highest level.

A high IQ player, Toohey is a smart mover off the ball and often finds himself in the right spot. He has good touch near the rim and the jumper is smooth when he steps outside. His shot is inconsistent, but is improving and projects to be reliable in the future. He has a quick release and takes perimeter shots with confidence.

The more he continues to play with the ball in his hands, Toohey has been able to show off his passing chops. Especially for his size, he is a solid facilitator. It will be fascinating to see him play in transition moving forward.

Toohey lacks the speed and athleticism to really be an elite defender as of today, but does generate steals at a high rate and has the size to block shots on the perimeter. We will see how he fares on that end in the NBL this season, playing against elevated competition and players with more quickness.

The NBL is loaded with young talent this season, with the Next Stars program boasting A.J. Johnson (Illawarra), Alex Sarr (Perth) and Bobi Klintman (Cairns), who all should be drafted in June. Playing for the Kings will bring high expectations for Toohey, as they have won back-to-back championships. Being on such an accomplished team will be a good thing for Toohey, who will have to prove he can impact the game as a complimentary piece and get a glimpse of what his role could look like early in the NBA.
