Prospect Profile

A forward with a skillet optimized by the modern style of play, Toppin is 6-foot-9 with the ability to produce on both ends of the floor. The New Mexico freshman is a two-way talent that is only getting better as the season goes on. He doesn't play all that flashy, but simply gets it done for his team and impacts winning.

On the offensive end, Toppin is very effective from inside the arc. When looking at his splits at the rim or even in the midrange, he makes the most of every single shot. He's also a reliable free throw shooter for a forward, which is an important trait for modern frontcourt players who want to close games. As the roll man in pick-and-role scenarios, he's proven to be especially good this season, which is yet another translatable skill as he looks ahead to the NBA. The 3-point shot is still a work in progress, but when that comes around he will possess a legitimate three-level scoring attack.

Toppin has been a disruptive defender this season, blocking a good amount of shots for his size and also generating steals in passing lanes. Both his block and steal percentages this season would indicate that his defensive ability will translate at the next level, especially with his length and athleticism. He's also a quality rebounder on both the offensive and defensive glass. He plays with a high motor and gives good effort, which is often half the battle when it comes to making plays.

Overall, Topin does everything that impacts winning. When looking at his advanced metrics, New Mexico is clearly a better team when he is on the floor that when he isn't. The former four-star recruit has been one of the most underrated freshman in the country this season, but will have a real shot at getting selected in the 2024 NBA Draft.
