Mookie Cook, Oregon

Prospect Profile

A freshman wing, Marquis — better known as Mookie — Cook is one of the more underrated first-year players at the college level. As he continues to grow into his frame and get stronger, he could end up being a freshman that breaks out late in first college season. Given his build and length, the Oregon prospect has a very projectable NBA frame.

What’s most intriguing about Cook is how well he finishes with both hands. Although a natural righty, you would never know given the way he uses his left hand at the rim. In terms of creating for himself as a driver, Cook doesn’t have a ton of wiggle, but uses his body well to get into the paint. If he can improve his handle and develop more of an ability to truly break down a defender, he could be a scary offensive threat.

Cook has a fairly quick and compact jumper that projects well moving forward. He can knock down shots from the perimeter, but also has the ability to rise above his defender with high release in midrange, whether it’s on the move dribbling or backing them down. He also has solid vision for a wing, but isn’t yet the type of prospect that should have the ball in his hands as a lead facilitator all the time. Regardless, he can make things happen, but could be better about letting the game come to him and score within the flow of the offense. Cook is also a good positional rebounder.

Defensively, Cook has the tools to end up being really special, especially on the perimeter. He can switch onto guards and defends well in space, having no problem defending out to half court. The Duck freshman generates a good number of blocks and steals as well, proving how disruptive he can be. There’s real upside on this end of the floor and he could emerge as a defensive playmaker. Two-way wings with good size are coveted in NBA, which is exactly what Cook has the chance to become.

A former four-star recruit out of Compass Prep in Arizona, Cook was actually born in Portland, Oregon and will stay close to home for college. He will turn 20 just after 2024 NBA Draft and will have every chance to rise up boards. He’ll be playing next to Kwame Evans at Oregon, who could also be a one-and-done at the college level.
