Prospect Profile
Luis hit the transfer portal after an Atlantic-10 All-Rookie Team selection at UMass to St. John’s to play under Rick Pitino for his sophomore campaign. He is the type of player that should be able to do a little bit of everything at the next level with his ability to score, pass rebound and also possess the frame to be a versatile defender at 6-foot-7.
He’s great when he gets to the paint and finishes well through contact. Roughly half of Luis’ shots came at the rim last season, but he also has a quality midrange game and can shoot it from deep too. The sophomore is a solid 3-point shooter (35% last season) but does have a slow load up and a small hitch in his shot. The transfer of energy isn’t as fluid as it needs to be, but seems fixable and he is a projectable shooter.
On the offensive end, there could be passing upside we haven’t seen yet. There’s a real chance he increases assist numbers this season in new system, but needs to limit turnovers. Luis sometimes tries to do too much and dribbles inefficiently, moving in place without creating an advantage or separation. He is also prone to taking bad shots at times. On the flip side, he really knows how to use his height as an advantage and likes to back defenders down in the midrange during his attempt to generate a good look.
Defensively, his positional size should allow him to defend three positions which is also a positive for NBA teams given how important versatility is in the modern game. His impact on that end along with improving his 3-point shot will really sway his draft stock.
Before playing at the college level, Luis spent a prep year at Mt. Zion in Maryland. He’ll now continue to elevate his play this season at St. John’s and make an effort to be an under the radar draft prospect ahead of the 2024 NBA Draft.
