NBA Draft Scouting Report: Virginia's Ryan Dunn
Ryan Dunn
Wing | Virginia
Height: 6'8” | Weight: 210 lbs
2024 Draft Age: 21.62
Prospect Profile
When it comes to sophomore breakout candidates, Dunn should be at the top of the list. He’s a jumbo guard that projects to be a wing at the next level and provides the length and skillset to be the perfect role player. With a 3-and-D mold, he should be a fast riser on draft boards ahead of the 2024 NBA Draft.
As a freshman at Virginia, Dunn played just over 400 minutes total and roughly 13 per game. Although it was a limited role, he was able to showcase some of the future upside and what he could provide.
For starters, the expectation is that he’ll be an extremely effective 3-point shooter in year two. While he only shot 31.3% (on 16 attempts) as a freshman, Dunn was a sniper from deep in high school. He has a pure stoke and quick release, with the ability to score on the move and pull-up over defenders.
As good as the perimeter shot is, Dunn’s defense might be the most attractive part of his game. He has the quickness, length and IQ to really be impactful on that end and guard a ton of positions. Whether he’s on or off the ball as a defender, he has the tools to really lock down and also be disruptive. He’s also a good positional shot blocker, which was evident last season in the limited sample size on the court (5.3 blocks per 100 possessions).
To really reach that ceiling defensively, Dunn will need to get stronger. This will also allow him to better defend bigger forwards.
A hard worker that’s willing to do the little things to win, Dunn will be a favorite of NBA teams in the pre-draft process. He’s always been underrated, but will have the chance to really emerge this season as a sophomore.
Virginia is known for producing NBA talent, even though the past two seasons haven’t told the same story. Dunn fits the archetype of past Virginia prospects like Trey Murphy III, with the length and wing size to be effective on defense, but also shoot it well from deep. This season with the Cavaliers, Dunn will play alongside another defensive stud in Reece Beekman, who is also looking to make the jump to the NBA.
Being a professional athlete is in Dunn’s genes, as his brother Justin is a pitcher for the Cincinnati Reds. Will the sophomore wing be next and make the jump to the NBA?
