In an official announcement on Friday, the Memphis Grizzlies revealed that starting guard Marcus Smart will be sidelined for 3-5 weeks with a left foot sprain that was sustained vs. the Los Angeles Lakers. This is a major blow for a Grizzlies team already missing Ja Morant, Steven Adams, Brandon Clarke, Derrick Rose, and have had others in and out of the lineup as well.

While Smart was not brought in solely for Morant's absence, the Grizzlies knew he would be a massive piece for them during the first 25 games their star point guard is suspended for. Now sidelined for around a month, Smart will not be able to contribute to a Grizzlies team off to about as poor of a start as anyone could have imagined.

The suspension of Ja Morant was always going to put the Grizzlies in a tough spot to start the year, but it's been everything else that has really put them in a hole. With a new injury to a key player popping up regularly, the Grizzlies have been unable to pull themselves out of the early hole they started in, currently sitting at 2-9 through 11 games.

Already with the worst record in the Western Conference, life does not look to be getting any easier for Memphis in the near future. The team will have to rally together even more now in the absence of Smart.
