Grizzlies Star Reacts to Shocking Marcus Smart Trade
The Memphis Grizzlies shocked the NBA world on Wednesday night, getting involved in the three-team trade involving the Boston Celtics and Washington Wizards to acquire former Defensive Player of the Year Marcus Smart. The initial trade was between the LA Clippers, Washington Wizards, and Boston Celtics, but the Clippers were removed from the trade, and it was Memphis who entered the deal.
Nobody expected Smart to be involved in this trade, especially since it was initially Malcolm Brogdon that was heading to the Clippers. Upon the news that the Grizzlies would be acquiring Smart, Grizzlies star Desmond Bane shared his reaction on Twitter:
Smart will likely start alongside Bane to begin next season, as Ja Morant will be serving a 25 game suspension. This addition gives a Grizzlies a starting point guard in Morant’s absence, and a vocal leader who is arguably the best defender in the NBA at his position. The Grizzlies gave up Tyus Jones in the deal, who is headed to Washington. It has been rumored for a few days that the Grizzlies were looking to trade Jones, who should have a chance to start on the Wizards. Parting with Jones and getting Smart in return definitely projects to make the Grizzlies better next season.
Desmond Bane was clearly excited about the news, and that’s likely the feeling of everybody on that team. Marcus Smart is a special player, and should be exactly what the Grizzlies need from that position. The fans in Boston will certainly miss him, but getting Kristaps Porzingis in this deal lands them even more fire power.
