Portland Trail Blazers guard Damian Lillard has performed at an MVP level numerous times in his career but a lack of team success has kept him out of conversations.

Last season was arguably the best of Lillard’s career, averaging a career-high 32.2 points along with 7.3 assists and 4.8 rebounds. However, Portland finished with a record of 33-49, placing them near the bottom of the Western Conference.

He is expected to be traded to the Miami Heat this summer, where he would join a team that has reached the NBA Finals in two of the past four seasons. Although Miami did not have the most impressive record last year, the addition of Lillard would be a great help.

On FanDuel, Lillard is currently listed with the ninth-best odds to win the award, behind the likes of Devin Booker, Stephen Curry, and Kevin Durant.

He certainly has a positional advantage in the race, with five winners being guards since 2011.

Lillard would likely not be able to match his statistical averages from previous years due to playing alongside All-Stars Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo. But it may prove insignificant if the Heat reign at the top of the Eastern Conference.

Lillard’s obligation is to win a championship with the Heat, but he would not complain if he won MVP.
