Is Miami Heat Guard Tyler Herro’s Trade Value Being Diminished Due To Recency Bias?

An injury during last season’s playoffs could have caused many teams to lose interest in Miami Heat's Tyler Herro

After an injury in the playoffs, Miami Heat guard Tyler Herro’s trade value is being greatly affected by recency bias.

Herro is expected to be involved in a trade that would acquire Portland Trail Blazers superstar Damian Lillard. However, the Blazers have expressed little interest in Herro because of their desire to develop their young backcourt. There is also skepticism about his impact on their team.

The Blazers have an extremely young roster, headlined by No. 3 pick Scoot Henderson and last year’s No. 7 pick Shaedon Sharpe. They are hesitant to adding Herro because the focus is on building around these promising players. Having all three would create a crowded backcourt.

Last season, Herro proved his worth as Miami’s third-leading scorer at averaging 20.1 points, 4.2 assists, and 5.4 rebounds. In the postseason, he sustained a broken right hand in the first round, leaving him sidelined for the remainder of the playoffs. The Heat went on to have a historic playoff run without him, becoming the second No. 8 seed to make the Finals.

Recency bias has been a recurring issue in the evaluation of players over the past few years, impacting the value of talents such as Kawhi Leonard and Anthony Davis. Prior to his injury, Herro was widely regarded as one of the most promising shooting guards in the league.

Teams may are doubting Herro's potential because the common problem of recency bias, especially the fact the Heat achieved success without him.
