Miami Heat vs. New York Knicks Takeaways: Heat Choke 21-Point Third Quarter Lead

A look at the five biggest takeaways from the Miami Heat’s loss to the New York Knicks
In this story:

The Miami Heat fell short to the New York Knicks in a nail-biting defeat, 100-98.

Here’s a look at five major takeaways:

1. The Heat’s lead sustainability is a glaring weakness.

In a multitude of games this season, Miami held double-digit leads late in the game. In arguably their worst loss of the season, they led by 21 points late in the third. If Miami hopes to succeed in the postseason, these results are unacceptable.

2. Sloppy play by both teams left much to be desired.

The Knicks and Heat played some of their least controlled basketball of the year. Miami finished with double-digit fouls and turnovers, along with shooting 27 percent from beyond the arc. Meanwhile, New York recorded 18 turnovers and shot less than 70 percent from the free throw line.

3. Bam Adebayo’s early efforts woke up the Heat.

Adebayo was sidelined for Miami’s blowout win against the Cleveland Cavaliers, but he picked up their slack early on. He began the game by scoring nine points on 3 of 4 shooting. He brought them back from a 10-1 start, ending the first quarter down by two points.

4. Josh Richardson had one of his best games of the season.

Although his role in the offense remains lackluster, Richardson had a memorable performance. With Duncan Robinson sidelined, he finished the night with 15 points and two steals on 50 percent shooting.

5. Jaime Jaquez Jr. is bound for the All-Rookie first team.

The UCLA rookie’s control and patience on the offensive end set him apart from the rest of his class. Jaquez concluded the game with 15 points, five rebounds, and four assists on 35.3 percent shooting. If he continues at this pace, Jaquez is a strong contender to earn an All-Rookie first-team selection.
