Miami Heat's Kyle Lowry Making Most Of New Role As A Reserve
Miami Heat guard Kyle Lowry had started 677 consecutive games before experiencing a new feeling last week.
Lowry was a reserve for the first time in 10 years when Heat coach Erik Spoelstra decided to start Gabe Vincent against the Orlando Magic last Saturday.
After two games, the Heat are realizing the benefit of having Lowry in the second unit.
"This is just a luxury for our team to have Kyle Lowry in 20 minutes off the bench," Spoelstra said. "... He's an incredible talent to be able to help organize that second unit ... When you have a Hall of Fame point guard that can help you get organized in those minutes, you don't have to over-coach them."
Lowry is averaging 9.7 points and four assists in his new role. He had eight points, four assists and four rebounds in Wednesday's victory against the Memphis Grizzlies.
"He's been very vocal, getting guys," Heat center Bam Adebayo said. "He's being that PG1 that we need when he comes in the game. He's controlling the pace of the game. If we're running transition, he's always the first guy off the court."
