A video released by Miami-Dade police shows a very emotional Miami Heat forward Haywood Highsmith after he was involved in a car crash last month.

The accident left victim Alekxei Pino with a partially amputated leg. The footage shows Highsmith attempting to explain to officers what happened.

“The signal lights weren’t on,” Highsmith tells an officer. “He got out the of car and by the time he got out, it was too late.”

At the time, Pino was assisting the driver of a disable vehicle. The incident occurred when Highsmith was driving home from the Heat's game in early February.

Pino has since filed a lawsuit against Highsmith, seeking damages in excess of $50,000.

Highsmith has been a key part of the Heat for the past two seasons. He was in the starting lineup until being replaced Caleb Martin Tuesday against the Magic. A former two-way contract player, Highsmith worked his way up to a rotation spot last season.

He was a key member of the team that advanced to play the Denver Nuggets in last year's NBA Finals. This year, Highsmith is averaging 5.8 points and 2.8 rebounds.

The Heat return to action tonight on the road against the Dallas Mavericks
