Breanna Stewart, Hot Ones Unveil 2024 New York Liberty Schedule
The New York Liberty's torch will light up again on May 14.
Fresh off one of the most memorable campaigns in WNBA history, the Liberty's quest to take one last championship step will begin next spring against the Washington Mystics. This will mark the second Liberty consecutive season that opens up in the nation's capital and will give the two teams a chance to get reacquainted after a memorable duel in the opening round of the most recent WNBA postseason.
To unveil the follow-up to the Liberty's recent run to the WNBA Finals, reigning league MVP Breanna Stewart partook in a special edition of "Hot Ones," the popular web series where celebrities answer questions while increasingly spicy chicken wings. Though Stewart is queried by wide-ranging WNBA media personality Ari Chambers, "Hot Ones" host Sean Evans was a regular in the courtside seats of Barclays Center during Liberty games.
The WNBA unveiled the schedule for its upcoming 28th season on Monday, one that gets started with all 12 teams in action on May 14. New York and Washington will partake in the opener with a 7 p.m. ET tip-off.
Squaring up against the Mystics is just one of many highlights on the Liberty's schedule, which includes a May 18 home opener against the Indiana Fever. Liberty legend Teresa Weatherspoon will come to Barclays as the head coach of the Chicago Sky for the first time on May 23 and the first of three Finals rematches against the Las Vegas Aces lands on June 15.
Next season's schedule also features a revamped format for the Commissioner's Cup, the WNBA's in-season competition, one that reduces the preliminary play to five games for each team over a two-week span (June 1-13) rather than the 10 that comprised the first three editions. A championship game hosted by the higher seed is slated for June 25.
The Liberty are the most recent team to earn in-season glory, beating the Aces in Sin City last summer.
“The newly designed, concentrated structure for this in-season tournament adds an increased sense of urgency and excitement as we place a particular spotlight on Eastern and Western Conference Commissioner’s Cup play in a two-week window near the tip-off of our regular season," WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert said in a league statement. "The focus is on making the Commissioner’s Cup presented by Coinbase even more engaging for all our stakeholders, including fans, teams, players, and the community organizations that collaborate with our teams during the designated games.”
This season will also feature a nearly-month-long hiatus (July 19-August 11) to account for both the WNBA All-Star Game (set to be held in Phoenix) and players' participation in the Summer Olympic Games in Paris.
