Stewievision: Liberty's Breanna Stewart to Guest Star in Alternate Knicks-Bucks Christmas Broadcast
Those looking for a different point of Stew this Christmas need not worry.
Per Brian Steinberg of Variety, New York Liberty star and reigning WNBA MVP Breanna Stewart will partake in an alternate broadcast of the New York Knicks' Christmas Day showdown with the Milwaukee Bucks on Monday. Stewart will be one of the guests on a different viewing experience hosted by fellow WNBA legends Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi, who are calling their first NBA game after debuting "The Bird & Taurasi Show" over the last two NCAA Women's Basketball Tournaments.
Monday's showdown between the Knicks and Bucks is the first of five games on the NBA's annual Yuletide slate. "The Bird & Taurasi Show" will be available on ESPN2 and ESPN+ while the traditional broadcast (called by Dave Pasch and former Knicks coach Hubie Brown) will air on ESPN.
Breanna Stewart, Hot Ones Unveil 2024 Liberty Schedule
Taking the mike alongside Bird and Taurasi is the latest activity in a busy offseason for Stewart, who's fresh off her first season in seafoam. Stewart recently helped unveil the Liberty's 2024 schedule in spicy fashion alongside WNBA media personality Ari Chambers and has also partaken in the team's "Season of Giving" holiday-based charity program.
Stewart surprised young participants in the Sadie Nash Leadership Project with a pair of her new signature sneakers from Puma (the Stewie 2 Stew York) during the Brooklyn Nets game on Dec. 2 and also volunteered in the nonprofit Bowery Misson's annual coat drive, which took in over 300 garments for New Yorkers in need.
"To spend my offseason here in New York and to give back to the community, especially during the holidays, is something that is super important," Stewart said in a statement from the Liberty. "We're making sure that we support all of New York City, all five boroughs, making sure that we can kind of reach communities whether we're playing there or not."
The Christmas showcase will reunite Stewart with Bird, a fellow Empire State native and University of Connecticut alumna. Stewart and Bird guided the Seattle Storm to two WNBA titles (2018, 2020) and own 18 All-Star appearances between them. Following Bird's retirement after 21 WNBA seasons in 2022, Stewart signed with the Liberty and helped guide the team to a Commissioner's Cup title and its first WNBA Finals appearance since 2002.
In addition to Stewart, Bird and Taurasi are set to be joined by actor Jason Sudeikis and Indiana Pacers All-Star Tyrese Haliburton. Sudeikis, best known for his eponymous role in the Apple TV+ series "Ted Lasso," was a frequent courtside guest at Barclays Center alongside Bird during the Liberty's run to the Finals.
Alternate broadcasts have grown in popularity thanks in part to the "Manningcast," which features Super Bowl champion brothers Eli and Peyton Manning calling NFL football games in ESPN's "Monday Night Football" package alongside celebrity guests. Peyton's Omaha Productions is set to produce "The Bird & Taurasi Show"
The New York Knicks' All-Christmas Team
New York basketball will be well-represented throughout the NBA's Christmas activities. Mike Breen, the play-by-play voice of the Knicks for MSG Network, will call the 5 p.m. ET game between the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers alongside color commentator and former MSG point guard Doc Rivers. Monica McNutt, who serves as the Knicks' color commentator on the Knicks' radio broadcasts on WEPN, will be on the mike for Miami and Philadelphia's 8 p.m. ET tip-off.
Stewart and the Liberty return to action this May. Before their Christmas clash, the Knicks and Bucks will do battle on Saturday at Madison Square Garden (12:30 p.m. ET, MSG).
