Why New York Knicks Starter Quentin Grimes Sought Out JJ Redick Training
New York Knicks guard Quentin Grimes spoke about his offseason workout plan as the team convened at The Citadel in South Carolina for training camp, including his training with NBA veteran JJ Redick.
For Grimes, set to return to the Knicks' primary shooting guard spot, seeking out the Dule legend for his shooting abilities.
"I know JJ was one of the best shooters ever in this league, his conditioning was otherworldly and stuff like that, so I was trying to get in the gym with him, learn the little things," Grimes said in video from SNY. "How he was coming off of screens, pindowns, I knew that was going to be some of the plays that (are) going to be (run) for me this season so I want to be prepared for whenever I get my number called."
Grimes is entering his third NBA season after the Knicks drafted him with the 25th overall pick of the 2021 NBA Draft out of Houston.
In his first two seasons in New York, Grimes has averaged 9.2 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 1.7 assists while shooting 45 percent from the field and 38.4 percent from beyond the arc. While he has shown great promise, Grimes is battling for playing time in a very deep guard rotation.
Already a solid three-point shooter, he chose to work with Redick, a 41.5 percent shooter over 15 NBA seasons, to improve his game.
Earlier this offseason, Redick expressed regret that the Knicks were not among his six NBA stops. Working with Grimes, perhaps, indirectly fulfills that urge. The former Blue Devil is set to take on an expanded role as an NBA game analyst on the ESPN family of networks this season.
