The New York Liberty and point guard Sabrina Ionescu agreed to a contract extension on Monday, keeping the top pick of the 2020 WNBA Draft in New York through the 2025 WNBA season. Such a deal comes days before the Liberty tip-off one of the most anticipated seasons in franchise history against the Washington Mystics on Friday night (7 p.m. ET, WWOR/NBA TV).

“I’m thankful and honored to be able to represent the New York Liberty for the next couple of years,” Ionescu said in a team statement. “(Team owners) Joe and Clara Wu Tsai, (general manager) Jonathan Kolb, and the entire Liberty organization has been nothing short of amazing over my time here, and I’m thrilled to work towards bringing a championship back to New York City.”

New York previously exercised Ionescu's fourth-year option last spring.

“We couldn’t be more excited to announce Sabrina’s multi-year extension,” Kolb said in the same statement. “Her career is already off to a historic start and her will to win is truly unparalleled. Sab has quickly become synonymous with the Liberty franchise, and we look forward to her continued success in New York for many years to come.”

After a record-breaking career at the University of Oregon, Ionescu has been the face of the Liberty's Brooklyn era after an injury limited her to three games during her rookie season in the Bradenton bubble. Over the past two years, she has averaged 14.9 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 6.2 assists in guiding the Liberty to the playoffs in consecutive seasons. Ionescu earned her first All-Star nomination last season as well as Second Team All-WNBA honors.

The extension allows Ionescu to see how the Liberty's long-gestating plan of contention pans out while the team gets to silence any questions about her immediate future. In addition to retaining 2021 All-Star Betnijah Laney, the Liberty brought in downright historic talents to assist with Ionescu's championship push, including Jonquel Jones, Breanna Stewart, and Courtney Vandersloot.
