Lakers Coach Darvin Ham Spoke to Christian Wood Every Day of Free Agency
Even as Lakers fans were clamoring for the team to sign the newest acquisition for the team, many of them were unaware that LA's head coach may have been more aggressive over the phone than even the most passionate fans could be on social media.
Speaking to the media for one of the first times since signing with the Purple and Gold, Christian Wood mentioned coach Darvin Ham's constant assurance that he'd be a fit with the team and his ultimate decision to choose LA to continue his career.
Likely slotting in as either the sixth man or a starting big for the team next to Anthony Davis, Wood's scoring punch and floor stretching ability should play very well next to Lebron James in any lineup.
Though defense and effort have been a concern for Wood in both of his previous stops in Houston and Dallas, perhaps the ability to play for a championship could rehabilitate his mentality and he could attack this opportunity for his NBA future better.
A consistent scorer, but not the greatest defender, that side of the floor was key for the Lakers' championship in 2020, with great depth in the frontcourt being a key contributor in conquering the bubble four years prior.
Wood will certainly have competition for play time on the roster with Jaxson Hayes and Taurean Prince both worthy of frontcourt minutes along side him for both the bench and as spot starters when the veterans Davis and James need rest or rehab from their injuries.
If the team can stay healthy, there's no reason why LA can't challenge for banner No. 18 in 2024, and Wood will certainly play a key role in that with his already great chemistry with Darvin Ham.
