Lakers News: Expert Floats Free Agent Celtics Role Player As Possible LA Signing

Would he make sense with the Lakers next season?
In this story:

Your Los Angeles Lakers have some crucial decisions to make this offseason. At this point, we don't know which direction the team is going to take. Externally, they have signaled to likely run things back with the roster that just went to the Western Conference Finals. But internally, they could have different plans. We will find out soon enough but there are some potentially interesting options available for them this summer.

Lakers insider Jovan Buva of The Athletic mentioned some names that the team could be interested in. One name was Celtics forward Grant Williams, who is a restricted free agent. If the team were to sign Williams, it would likely take all of their non-taxpayer midlevel exception which triggers a hard cap.

Williams averaged 8.1 points and 4.6 rebounds a game last season for Boston. He has been a key role player for them over the last few seasons, including when the team went to the NBA Finals in 2022. Williams shot 39.5 percent from three last season so his ability to space the floor could intrigue the Lakers. He also can play aggressive defense well, which was apparent in their Eastern Conference Finals series against Jimmy Butler and the Miami Heat.

Now, Williams is an intriguing option for the team but you do have to wonder if the Lakers want to get themselves into a situation where they sign him, only for the Celtics to match. They are limited what they can offer Williams and Boston would likely match the offer.

Boston has been pretty vocal about wanting to re-sign Williams but he would solve some of the teams issues. Additionally, Williams just had hand surgery but is expected to be ready by training camp. That could play a factor in the decisions from the Lakers.

However the team wants to play this offseason could dictate the futures of both LeBron James and Anthony Davis. The quest for banner number 18 continues and this offseason is the start to the journey.
