Former Lakers Big Man Waived By 76ers Just Ahead of 2024 Season

He may end up overseas.

Former Los Angeles Laker and more recently ex-Philadelphia 76er Montrezl Harrell has been waived less than a day before the 2023-2024 NBA season.

Harrell, 29, was the 32nd overall pick in the 2015 NBA draft, and played 3 years of college basketball at Louisville, where he won a now vacated NCAA championship in 2013.

Harrell had been a member of the 76ers since the beginning of last season, signing there after bouncing around between the Wizards and Hornets following 3 seasons with the Clippers and 1 with the Lakers.

"Trezz" won the Sixth Man of the Year Award as a Clipper in 2020, averaging an impressive 18.6 points and 7.1 rebounds per game on 58% shooting from the field.

With time, however, his limited offensive game and poor defensive play reduced his role significantly, as he found himself playing just 11.9 minutes per game with Philadelphia last season, where he averaged just 5.6 points. Even as a member of the Lakers, while he put up 13.5 points per game in just 23 minutes, he received under 10 minutes per game in the postseason in spite of injuries to Anthony Davis and limited depth, reflecting his performance in non-scoring areas.

Harrell should find himself another team, however, as remains just 29 years old and a somewhat versatile power forward/center with 32 games of playoff experience under his belt. That said, the NBA has begun moving away from hsi type of skillset, potentially leading to an international career being his best bet

Shams Charania of The Athletic reports that the Sixers "will continue supporting Harrell in his rehab and recovery plan."
