Former Lakers Champion Guard Hired as New Head Coach of Local High School

A new chapter for a long-time member of purple and gold.

Key cog for the Lakers championship teams in the 2000s this Laker legend has returned to the coaching sidelines after a brief hiatus.

Former guard and NBA head coach Derek Fisher has landed a new coaching gig at Encino High School for this upcoming season in the next chapter of his career.

Fisher's basketball career began as he made a name for himself in his native Arkansas at the high school level, much like current Laker guard Austin Reaves.

Similarly to Reaves, Fisher went on to play four seasons for Little Rock University, ending his collegiate career as the Sun Belt Conference's Player of the Year in 1996 as a senior.

Drafted in 1996's first round, Fisher quickly found a partnership with Laker legend Kobe Bryant after they made their collective ways to Los Angeles on draft night.

Playing as a reserve for a majority of his first six seasons, Fisher collected three consecutive championship rings alongside both Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal as one of the NBA's best ever dynasties.

In the 2002-03 season Fisher started consistently for the Lakers and continued this trend even after donning new jerseys other than the purple and gold.

After stints with the Warriors and Jazz, Fisher made his way back to the Lakers to be the Lakers' starting point guard in the post-Shaq era.

The second time around for the Lakers proved just as successful as the first for Fisher as he appeared in three straight Finals, winning the latter two to secure five rings on his career.

Though his efforts at a sixth ring were unsuccessful with the Oklahoma City Thunder and Dallas Mavericks, Fisher quickly transitioned to a coaching career with both the Knicks and more recently for the LA Sparks.

It's the next step for the former Laker who recently saw a previous teammate complete his own milestone this offseason.

We wish Fisher well in this next endeavor in leaving his legacy from the purple and gold!
