Lakers Hall Of Famer Explains Why Victor Wembanyama May Not Live Up To Hype Right Away

Let's give him some time!

Over the past couple of seasons, it's becoming obvious that Father Time is starting to creep in for a number of stars that have dominated the NBA over the past decade. Just six years ago, the likes of John Wall and Isaiah Thomas were having a classic playoff battle while reigning strong as two of the best point guards across the league. Fast forward to 2023 and both of them are holding private workouts during summer league to try and land roster spots next season.

This new generation of talent has developed quickly and we are seeing a historic rate of max extensions being signed as franchises do their best to ensure that their top picks do not go anywhere in their first couple of seasons. And we are in the midst of watching the beginning of the career of a potential generational individual in Victor Wembanyama.

He really needs no introduction but just the general reaction after he struggled in his first summer league game with the San Antonio Spurs said it all... the NBA world wants him to prove his worth off the jump and in this social media era, unrealistic expectations fly around more than ever. With all of the hype surrounding his name leading up to the 2023 Draft, Wemby has not been gifted the same developmental timeline as others.

And Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, former champion big man for your Los Angeles Lakers, shared some wise words to the general basketball world about why the number one overall pick should be approached with patience.

"He really hasn't matured yet," said Abdul-Jabbar. "What he might go through this next year or two will probably give him that type of maturity and enable him to understand our game and make whatever physical adjustments he could make."

Cap certainly knows better than most and through his years of experience in the league, his advice should definitely be listened to!
