Lakers News: Expert Unpacks LA's Salary Cap Following Anthony Davis Extension

A lot of numbers to run through here!

Your Los Angeles Lakers were able to lock up their superstar big man Anthony Davis for the remainder of the near future with his new extension worth around $186 million over the next three years. Even though plenty of critics have been quick to point out how AD has suffered a number of injuries over the last few years and has not always been reliable in key stretches of the regular season, it was important for LA to lock him down now versus waiting for free agency when other teams could make a run for him.

This deal came after the Lakers were able to re-sign a number of other key contributors during the offseason while also welcoming in some new veterans to help them make another run towards the NBA Finals. Between Austin Reaves, Rui Hachimura and AD, the organization will be forking over $300 million and they'll still have the rest of the roster to worry about over the next few years.

Bleacher Report's Julia Stumbaugh broke down how their contracts along with LeBron James' own potential expiring deal with affect LA's cap moving forward.

"The Lakers' active cap hit of $163.8 million ranks 11th in the NBA for the 2023-24 season and leaves the team about $8.5 million below the $172.3 million first apron. Exceeding that first apron would come with limits on sign-and-trades, salary matching in trades and buyout signings. James and Davis are set to combine for 64.8 percent of the Lakers' cap during the 2023-24 season. James' cap hit increases to $51.4 million and Davis' rises to $43.2 million in 2024-25, but those could actually represent lower percentages of the cap."

We'll have to see how this current group performs together to kick off the new season and assess if the contracts are worth it and if not, expect some moves to take place within the franchise once again!
