When the Lakers selected Jalen Hood-Schifino with the 17th overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, it came as a bit of a surprise. While he was being looked at by the Lakers, many thought the team could go in a different route. But the scouting department has earned the trust of the fans due to their recent history of successful draft picks.

Hood-Schifino should fit right in with the Lakers as he is a big, versatile guard that knows how to run an offense. His jump shot may still be a work in progress but working with the coaching staff, the team is hopeful that he will develop it.

With such a deep draft class, you’d imagine that the odds for him to possibly win the Rookie of the Year award for this upcoming season are low. Well if you guessed that they are, you’d be correct.

He is towards the bottom of the rookie list to win the award which seems appropriate for a player that will be on the same team as LeBron James and Anthony Davis.

Players that tend to win the award normally are primary scorers themselves and Hood-Schifino will likely be a bench player at best this coming year. He could crack the starting lineup if he really surprises or if injuries come into play but even then, his chances are low to win the award.

Hood-Schifino has the look of a solid role player for LA and maybe one day could become a great player. His poise and devotion to the game was a big reason as to why the Lakers selected him and the team is very high on his skillset.
