Lakers News: Why Big LA Playoff Contributor Ditched Team In Free Agency

Good luck to him next season!

This past offseason saw the Lakers bring back the majority of core players from their team last year that reached the Western Conference Finals. LA valued continuity this summer instead of going star-chasing as they had previously done.

It was important to General Manager Rob Pelinka that they kept the core together, because of all the success they saw in the second half of the season. He did his job in keeping them together, except one player was left out.

Point guard Dennis Schroder left the Lakers to sign a two-year deal with the Toronto Raptors, but he did want to return to the team. However, once the Lakers signed guard Gabe Vincent to a new deal, the writing was on the wall for the former LA point guard.

Recently, Schroder opened up about why he decided to leave the Lakers this summer, despite his want to return.

“I think uh, Darko, you know the head coach. This is his first year as a head coach as well. I met him five years ago I think in OKC, we became friends and I liked how he was coaching”

Per Dennis Scroder

The connection between the former Lakers guard and Darko Rajaković seems to be a big reason why Schroder left the team. Having these relationships and feeling comfortable can go a long way in helping players decide where to ultimately sign.

He also expressed an interest in how the Raptors will likely play this season, and it fits his style more.

“I think it’s a great fit to play like the national team type, handle the ball a little bit more, go out and run.”

Per Dennis Schroder

Schroder did a lot for the Lakers last season, and he will be missed, but he is in a good situation in Toronto. There are no hard feelings between anyone, and we all wish Schroder the best this season, except when the Raptors play the Lakers.
