Orlando Magic's Franz Wagner: Top Breakout Candidate?
The Orlando Magic has many young players that could take a sudden jump this season, but none more likely than Franz Wagner, according to a group of NBA executives.
In a poll conducted by HoopsHype, they asked 25 NBA executives what NBA player they thought was most likely to have a breakout year. Wagner barely beat out Detroit Pistons guard Cade Cunningham for the top spot, as Wagner received at least one vote from 15 of the 25 executives polled, the most of any player.
Wagner averaged 18.6 points per game this past season with very solid percentages from the field as a whole and from three. If his numbers steadily improve as they have so far, he could be a 20 points per game scorer and become a real threat from everywhere on the floor.
The main reason that NBA executives cited for choosing Wagner as the most likely player to break out is the sheer amount of things that he can do on the floor. One of the executives polled talked more about this in an interview with HoopsHype.
“I saw Franz Wagner a ton last year, and he’s really good. His shooting will be the swing skill. If he consistently knocks that down at a higher clip, he’ll be a 20-plus scorer," the NBA executive told HoopsHype. "He does so many things and is only scratching the surface of how good he can be."
One of the most important things that separates the good players from the great players is being able to do absolutely everything on the floor. Wagner will have a chance to prove he can do just that as he and the rest of the Magic will be taking on the Cleveland Cavaliers on Thursday. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
