Orlando Magic PG Markelle Fultz: 'Best is Yet to Come'
ORLANDO - The NBA season is just around the corner, and according to starting point guard Markelle Fultz, Orlando Magic fans should be in for a treat.
"The best is yet to come," Fultz said. "You know, and I think that's what most excites me, you know, I have a lot I can get better at. But more importantly, you know, just being healthy and being able to be, you know, out there on a cooler, I think you're just gonna be able to see more and more."
Last season was the first time in Fultz's career he shot over 30 percent from three and 50 percent from the field. It was also the second time he played more than 60 games in a season; he also had career highs, averaging 13.9 points, 3.9 rebounds, 1.4 steals, and 5.7 assists.
After struggling to find his footing early on in his career due to injuries, Fultz has enjoyed a career resurgence in Orlando. With continued good health, fans should expect that the best is yet to come. The real question is, what does Fultz's ceiling look like?
Prior to injury, Fultz earned the right to be drafted No. 1 overall in the 2017 NBA Draft over Jayson Tatum after a phenomenal freshman season at Washington that saw him look like an elite scoring prospect. At this point in his NBA career, Fultz has recovered most of his old game, but his scoring still leaves more to be desired from his days as a prospect.
Expecting him to become the offensive focal point like he was in college is likely asking too much of him as he enters his seventh NBA season, but shooting closer to his college average of 41 percent from three would drastically help the Magic with their spacing on the floor and ascend his pro game to another level.
What the best looks like for Fultz remains to be seen, but if he continues his current trajectory, Orlando could have a Most Improved Player candidate on its roster.
