Magic G Leaguers Mac McClung & Miye Oni Prime NBA Call-Up Candidates?
ORLANDO, Fl. - Starting on Friday, NBA teams will be able to start signing players to 10-day contracts, and two of the top candidates for NBA call-ups before the league's January 15 two-way contract deadline are currently playing for the Orlando Magic's G League affiliate in Osceola, Mac McClung, and Miye Oni.
You may know McClung for winning the NBA Dunk Content with the Philadelphia 76ers a year ago, but his game on the court also has a lot of potential.
Thanks to his elite scoring, McClung was listed as one of Bleacher Report's most likely young G League prospects to test out. His 25.5 points per game through 14 showcase appearances, second in the G League only to Houston Rockets first-round rookie Cam Whitmore, and his 6.3 assists per game indicate his comfort as a playmaker.
However, the question marks surrounding the 6-2 point guard's game stem from his defensive game; "He struggles most on the defensive end, where he doesn't do much to stop fellow G-Leaguers (let alone NBA talent)," Bleacher Report writes. "An NBA team could give him a look as a second-unit scorer. McClung may get an opportunity before the season's end."
Despite McClung's star power in the G League, the undersized guard isn't typically the type of player most coveted by NBA teams at this point in the season. "Role players are often brought in to help a team defend and rebound, with offensive production a bonus. Competent ball-handlers may be at a premium," Bleacher Report said.
Someone who fits the mold of a potential role NBA player is fellow Osceola Magic player, Miye Oni. Standing 6-5, Oni's production in the G League might not jump off the page (8.6 points, 4.1 assists in 16 games), but his 44.4 shooting percentage from three-point range should.
Magic Moment: Mosley Praises G League Star Brandon Williams on Signing with Mavs
"Miye Oni isn't a dominant scorer in the G League, but he is lighting it up from behind the arc. While he isn't a point guard, his 4.1 assists per game show he can do more than just catch and shoot," Bleacher Report said. "Oni also has three years of experience with the Utah Jazz, and while the shooting didn't initially translate, he deserves another look."
Considering that Osceola has already had guard Brandon Williams picked up by the Dallas Mavericks on a two-way contract and Magic two-way star Trevelin Queen has been positive during his increased NBA opportunities as of late, perhaps other franchises would be wise to continue testing out Osceola's roster which although streaky has been unstoppable at times offensively this season.
