Magic Summer League Coach Has 'Good Problem'
The Orlando Magic Summer League team is deep.
Orlando began its play in Las Vegas in a matchup against the Detroit Pistons, featuring Jaden Ivey, Jalen Duren, Ausar Thompson and James Wiseman. The Magic fell 89-78 to the Pistons, but saw promising play from the young guys on the squad.
"I think our front office did a really good job putting together a strong Summer League roster," Summer League head coach Dylan Murphy told media after Sunday's practice. "They gave me a good problem to have."
Out of the starters, the Magic played two second-year guys in Caleb Houstan and Kevon Harris. Murphy had praise for the two guys.
"It's really amazing what a year of experience in Summer League will do for you. I think [Houston and Harris] had a calmness about them, leading the group," Murphy said. "Everyone's having a good experience being able to learn and grow from it."
Houstan knocked down four of his ten 3-pointers in the matchup. He shot 34 percent from beyond the arc this past season, but has shown his capabilities to raise that number.
"His demeanor is very calm, poise. He doesn't get too high, he doesn't get too low," Murphy said of Houstan. "He does all the right things."
Another performance to look at is rookie Jett Howard. Though he didn't shoot the ball well, shooting 3-of-13 from the field, he put together a strong effort defensively and was engaged throughout the game.
"Great credit to Jett. I thought defensively, he was in the right spots. He gave great effort. His care factor has been really high since the start of Summer League practice, through the first game,' Murphy said. "He's still learning, growing and getting better every game."
Murphy continued, stating that another promising aspect of Howard's game was, even though he was missing, he was finding good looks and taking the shots he was supposed to be.
Murphy and the Magic return to the court tonight to face the Indiana Pacers. Tipoff is scheduled for 8:30 p.m.
