Magic SG Caleb Houstan 'Doing All The Right Things'

The Orlando Magic's young squad should follow the tone set by second-year player Caleb Houstan after coming off of a loss in the first Summer League game.

It may be just the second season for Orlando Magic wing Caleb Houstan, but his experience is something that the team’s Summer League head coach Dylan Murphy believes will help the team mature.

“He’s very calm. Voice doesn’t get too high, doesn’t get too low. I think other guys just feed off that, the way they kind of feel them on the floor. He gets a bunch of shots early. He’s not celebrating too much. Gets back on defense, you know, pulls over as low man does all the right things.” Murphy said. “Even when he missed a couple of shots, he’s still doing all the right things. So, not being too high, not being too low. Everyone can learn from the way he carries himself, myself included.”

Keeping a level head is paramount for this young Orlando squad’s development, but it’s also something that Magic fans must learn to do. Following Jett Howard’s inefficient debut, where he shot 3-13 from the field, fans were already calling him a bust on Twitter, but Murphy had some more positive takeaways.

“Great credit to Jett. I thought defensively; he was in the right spots. He gave great effort,” Murphy said. “He’s still learning and growing, and he’ll get better every game and but I think we’re all very proud of how we played the first game. And as you guys know, shots go in, or shots don’t go in, you know, as long as you take good shots and do the right things over time, you have success.”

If Howard can remain calm like Houstan and trust that his shots will fall in time, then perhaps he’ll have himself a bounce-back game reminiscent of Victor Wembanyama’s offensive turnaround last night, but that will all depend on how he handled the adversity of a rough start and how he used his day in between games, something that Murphy believes is equally important to game time minutes.

“I think part of pro basketball is you have to take a lot of what happens on film and just be able to apply it without necessarily having practice time to do it on the floor,” Murphy said. “We’ll just see how it all translates tomorrow against Indiana.”

Orlando will get a chance to show its improvement tonight at 8:30 pm EST when they go against the Pacers’ undefeated Summer League team and hope to even their record at 1-1.
