Magic 'Kicking Around' on Kyle Lowry Trade, Per Report
ORLANDO - The Orlando Magic have long sought for a veteran point guard, and they may be able to acquire one just before Thursday's NBA Trade Deadline.
According to Action Network insider Matt Moore, the Magic are showing interest in recently-traded veteran guard Kyle Lowry.
"For the Magic, they're in a unique position to send assets they are willing to part with if Lowry is content to stay in Orlando," Moore writes. "It might provide the Magic with a way to add a veteran while they try to find long-term answers there, even if that answer is ultimately committing money to Markelle Fultz on a big extension."
Lowry, 37, was traded by the Miami Heat on Jan. 23 to the Charlotte Hornets for Terry Rozier and a future first-round pick. He isn't expected to stay with the Hornets beyond the deadline and hasn't played a game for them. Instead, he'll look to finish the season with a playoff contender ... perhaps the Magic?
The Magic are 26-23, just 0.5 game behind the Indiana Pacers for the No. 6 spot in the East and safety from the Play-In Tournament. Adding a veteran like Lowry could help the Magic rise in the standings and reach the playoffs for the first time since 2020.
NBA Trade Idea: Magic Acquire Pistons' Bogdanovic
While the idea of adding Lowry certainly helps the Magic, it lacks in practicality. The Magic wouldn't trade for an expiring contract worth $29 million just for him to be a backup, which was Lowry's role for the Miami Heat. Perhaps Orlando could show interest on the buyout market, but Lowry would be more likely to sign with a team with stronger championship aspirations than the Magic.
The NBA Trade Deadline is set for Thursday at 3 p.m. ET.
