OFFICIAL: Mavs Re-Sign Kyrie Irving to 3-Year, $126M Contract; Details
Heading into the offseason — one that was much shorter than anticipated after missing the postseason — the Dallas Mavericks made re-signing star point guard Kyrie Irving their top priority. After months of rumors and speculation, the Mavs finally came to an agreement with Irving on the first day of free agency that will keep him in Dallas alongside Luka Doncic.
That deal is officially signed, sealed and delivered, as the ink is dry on Irving's new three-year contract worth $126 million. The deal has a player option for the third season. Irving took to Twitter to voice his approval of his new deal.
After the Mavs traded away Dorian Finney-Smith, Spencer Dinwiddie and an unprotected 2029 first-round pick for Irving, it was vitally important that they re-sign him. Had they not, all those assets given up in February’s blockbuster trade would’ve been for merely 20 games of Irving in Dallas and no playoffs.
Although Dallas faltered at the end of the 2022-23 season, it wasn’t because of the play of Irving, who was an excellent offensive fit next to Doncic. In 20 games for the Mavs, Irving averaged 27 points, five rebounds and six assists while shooting 51 percent from the field, 39 percent from deep and 95 percent from the free-throw line.
Defense, rebounding and rim protection were the biggest areas of concern that kept the Doncic-Irving duo from living up to its full potential. But now, with the moves made on draft night and the moves still to come, Irving has another shot at making the Mavs a title contender once again.
