NBA Insider: Mavs Would ‘Love’ to Revisit Clint Capela Trade

As the NBA offseason quiets down, Dallas’ hopes to acquire a new starting center lingers.

The Dallas Mavericks’ offseason has been rather successful based on their wish list heading into the summer and what they've been able to accomplish so far.

Dallas re-signed Kyrie Irving, which was its top priority, and landed a versatile defensive forward in Grant Williams via sign-and-trade with the Boston Add in reuniting with sharpshooter Seth Curry and acquiring Dereck Lively II and OMax Prosper on draft night, and that's a pretty solid summer for any team to have.

However, the biggest omission from the Mavs’ offseason list has been not being able to land their preferred veteran starting center.

On Saturday, NBA insider Marc Stein hosted his radio show, "The Saturday Stein Line" on 97.1 The Freak, and he answered questions from listeners, including Dallas’ lingering hopes to land Atlanta Hawks center Clint Capela

“The Mavericks don’t want to be done. Maybe they are done with this roster because further moves are not available to them,” Stein said. "They would love if the chance to make another trade run at Clint Capela from the Atlanta Hawks materializes.”

Stein added: "To this point, as we dribble to the end of July, that opportunity has not availed itself to the Mavericks. But, will Atlanta move Capela elsewhere that creates an opportunity for Dallas to get in as the third team?”

As Stein noted, Dallas and Atlanta had discussions near the NBA draft for Capela, ending with the Mavericks balking at the Hawks’ ask for either Josh Green or Jaden Hardy in the deal. But, if Dallas feels that its back is against the wall when it comes to upgrading at center, something that might be needed to jump into true title contention, a deal for Capela should remain on their to-do list.

“Would the Mavs love for that opportunity to be presented? Yes, they would,” Stein said.

As the offseason trudges along, training camp is right around the corner, and we'll see if Dallas is able to change up their roster one last time before the 2023-24 season officially tips off.
