NBA Insider Reveals New Free Agency Info on Jaylen Nowell; Mavs Out?
The Dallas Mavericks were linked to Minnesota Timberwolves shooting guard Jaylen Nowell in free agency rumors last week, but one NBA insider is telling us we should pump the brakes on that idea for now.
On the latest episode of "Saturday Stein Line with Marc Stein," Marc Stein says he's hearing that the Mavs aren't in the running for Nowell at this point, although things can change later on.
“I know there were some recent reports that Jaylen Nowell from Minnesota is a potential target. I was actually told the Mavericks are not really in that race at this point,” Stein said. “So, to this point, I would scratch Nowell as a target for the Mavericks, at least that was that’s what I was told yesterday.”
Given how guard-heavy the Mavs' current roster is with players like Tim Hardaway Jr., Seth Curry, Josh Green, Jaden Hardy and Dante Exum, it wouldn't make much since for Dallas to sign Nowell unless a big trade is made that clears out more room in that department.
Nowell, who is 24 years old, is an unrestricted free agent, and he’s coming off a four-year, $6.6 million deal with Minnesota. Last season, Nowell averaged a career-high 10.8 points while shooting 44.8 percent from the field.
According to multiple reports, the Mavs are still looking for ways to trade Hardaway and JaVale McGee before the season begins. With that in mind, there could still be a chance for Dallas to be interested in Nowell at some point down the line, but for now, the Mavs don't have many reasons to seriously consider the idea.
