NBA Buyout Market: Mavs Shifting Focus to Will Barton, Danny Green?

After initially being called the "frontrunners" to sign Terrence Ross on the NBA buyout market, the Phoenix Suns swooped in and grabbed him at the last second. Now, Dallas is looking at other wings to bolster its depth for a playoff run.

On Saturday, the Dallas Mavericks were considered "frontrunners" to sign Orlando Magic swingman Terrence Ross after he secured a buyout. However, later in the day, after Ross did secure his buyout, the Phoenix Suns swooped in and apparently changed his mind.

With Ross going to Phoenix, the Mavs are now shifting focus to other wings who could potentially hit the buyout market and help the team going forward. Will Barton and Danny Green are a couple of names to keep an eye on for Dallas, according to NBA reporter Marc Stein.

In 40 games for the Washington Wizards, Barton has averaged 7.7 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.4 assists while shooting just 38.7 percent form the field. However, he's shooting a more-respectable 38 percent from deep on 3.4 attempts.

Before having a drop-off in production in Washington this season, Barton averaged 14.2 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.4 assists over a seven-season span for the Denver Nuggets while shooting 43.7 percent from the field and 36.5 percent from deep.

As for 35-year-old Green, who the Mavs infamously waited nearly a week for during 2019 free agency just to end up as second fiddle, has only played in three games this season after returning from an ACL tear he suffered in May 2022. Because of that, his underwhelming stats aren't really indicative of what he could potentially bring to the Mavs, but it's safe to say that Barton would be the safer bet.

Another name could potentially pop up on the Mavs' radar is Patrick Beverley. Although he hasn't officially been linked to the Mavs yet, he shares an agent with Luka Doncic, and he could probably still bring more to the table offensively and defensively as an end-of-the-bench guy than Frank Ntilikina and Theo Pinson can.

Mavs GM Nico Harrison said on Friday that his team would be prioritizing wing depth on the buyout market, so expect Dallas to exhaust all options there before potentially turning to a player like Beverley as a last resort.
