Mavs to Sign Justin Holiday After Missing Out on Terrence Ross
DALLAS — The Dallas Mavericks recently made a blockbuster trade to acquire NBA All-Star starter Kyrie Irving. They did not make another move before the Feb. 9 deadline. The attention has been placed on the buyout market with an open roster spot to use.
According to ESPN's Brian Windhorst, the Mavs will sign Justin Holiday after he clears waivers. He agreed to a buyout agreement with the Houston Rockets on Monday, allowing him to sign with another team.
On the season, Holiday averaged 4.5 points, 0.8 rebounds, and 0.9 assists in 14.7 minutes per game in 28 appearances with the Hawks. He is shooting 38.4 percent from the floor and 34.5 percent from 3-point range.
Holiday had fallen out of the Hawks' rotation early and hadn't found his way back. On a team with plenty of options on the wing, there wasn't room for the veteran to consistently earn playing time. He was traded to the Houston Rockets along with Frank Kaminsky in exchange for Garrison Matthews and Bruno Fernando.
Mavs general manager Nico Harrison told reporters in Sacramento that wing depth and defense will be priorities when surveying options on the buyout market.
"I think we have most of the things covered," Harrison said. "Just some wing depth out there that makes sense. Maybe some defense."
The Mavs initially targeted Terrence Ross on the buyout market and were initially considered the frontunners for his services. He ultimately decided to join the Phoenix Suns after a late recruiting effort from new owner Matt Ishba and coach Monty Williams.
