Trade Rumors Unfair? Draymond Green Discusses Luka Doncic vs. Trae Young
The draft night trade between the Dallas Mavericks and Atlanta Hawks in 2018 has created unlimited comparisons between Luka Doncic and Trae Young, despite them being different types of players.
The debates and comparisons are never ending, and now, Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green offered his commentary on the matter while on his show, The Draymond Green Show.
"Luka is incredible," Green told Young, who was a guest on the podcast. "One of the guys I absolutely hate guarding. Great player."
Green began his segment by complimenting Doncic before turning the focus onto the comparisons: "You're All-NBA, he's All-NBA. You're an All-Star, he's an All-Star. Neither has won MVP. Both has led their teams to a conference finals."
Green continued. "[Doncic's] team didn't make the play-in game. Your name's getting thrown in trade talks the day of the [play-in] game. Have not heard anyone ever say 'Luka should be traded.'"
Players are hard to compare given the different situations they might be in. One team may equip their team with more talent than the other. Some play styles might not mesh as well with certain teammates. The criteria for comparing the two players isn't defined, so there will likely never be a true answer to the debate – although many NBA people would tell you they'd take Doncic over Young.
All-in-all, the two players are in different situations on different organizations with one common goal, and that's to win an NBA Championship, which neither team has done in their young careers.
"You've done some of the same things," Green told Young. "Everyone is always comparing you to guys. Reality is, when you take a step back, it's very close in points, you probably lead in assists."
Doncic has 110 more points than Young for their careers in 23 less games and averages 2.1 more points per game. Young averages 1.3 more assists per game than Doncic, with 654 more career assists. Again, though, there is no clear line or deciding factor when comparing the players. Both teams got the player they felt they needed and could maximize at the time, but we're sure this won't be the last time the topic gets brought up.
