NBA Insider: Mavs Trying To Trade 10th Pick; Looking For More
Looking at this year's NBA draft, which gets underway one week from today, there seems to be more chatter about potential trades within the lottery than we've seen in previous years — and that chatter includes the Dallas Mavericks.
In The Ringer's latest mock draft, Kevin O'Connor had the Mavericks selecting UCF's Taylor Hendricks at No. 10, but noted that Dallas ultimately may be looking to move the pick.
"Sources say they're (Mavericks) trying to move down for multiple picks or players, or out of the draft entirely,” O’Conner wrote.
Dallas has found themselves involved in seemingly endless rumors, whether that's regarding their plans for No. 10 or with Kyrie Irving's unrestricted free agency. Most have speculated that the Mavs should, or would prefer, to trade the No. 10 pick for a package that contains a win-now piece to contend alongside Luka Doncic and Irving.
But if the right prospect is still on the board at No. 10 that Dallas' front office loves, should the Mavs stand pat and draft for themselves?
O'Connor noted that “if a player like Hendricks falls then perhaps someone will want to make a strong bid on draft night.” That could very well be the case as Hendricks surely has fans around the league excited. Hendricks would come in and likely be the Mavericks' best defender on day one with huge upside to grow alongside Doncic.
Yet, if a win-now piece is made available or a package of multiple picks or players that O'Connor referenced is on the table, Dallas would have to pull the trigger with their timeline.
Whatever the case may be come draft night, Nico Harrison and company will do anything in their power to build the best possible roster around Doncic for this upcoming season. What other choice do they have?
