Kyrie Irving Has 'Expressed Desire' to Re-Sign with Mavs, Regardless of LeBron James Trade
Monday was a whirlwind for the Dallas Mavericks, as The Athletic's Shams Charania reported that star guard Kyrie Irving has "reached out" to Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James in an attempt to recruit him to Big D. Bleacher Report's Chris Haynes reinforced that report, saying that Irving wants the Mavs' front office to explore ways to make such a trade for James become a reality.
Regardless of whether the Mavs are able to pull off a pipe-dream trade for James or not, NBA insider Marc Stein reports that Irving has 'consistently expressed a desire' to re-sign in Dallas and stay alongside four-time All-NBA First Team superstar Luka Doncic.
"Yet two sources close to the process insisted Monday that Irving has consistently expressed a desire to remain a Maverick and actually wants to shut down the notion that he’s angling to get to L.A.," Stein writes.
"'He wants to stay,' said one source. The clear signals Monday out of Dallas suggest that the Mavericks believe that. With or without a LeBron reunion."
After Irving was seen sitting courtside at a couple of Lakers playoff games, many in the national media jumped to the conclusion that he was trying to enhance his chances of signing with James' squad this summer. However, if all of Monday's reports hold true, it appears that Irving could've been in L.A. on a recruiting trip for the team he wants to re-sign with in a few weeks when free agency begins on June 30.
